craftgrrl | sewing machine recommendations?

Hi! I found a 1913 treadle Singer sewing machine (picture!) in the trash earlier this year and I've been fixing it up very slowly, but I realized I probably need a modern machine as well. Can anyone recommend a good machine (and where to get it) for under $200? I want to make bags and curtains and little useful things, and one day maybe I'll be good enough to make cute animal hoodies. I'm pretty much a sewing newbie at the moment... but I'm pretty sure I'll need more than just a basic straight stitch.
