I Crocheted a Hat!
Mar. 13th, 2005 01:37 pmThis hat fits a large head. To make a smaller hat, you can stop the crown at round 8, or even 7. The important thing is that the number of stitches in the last row of your crown is divisible by 6. This is necessary for the shell stitching in the sides of the hat.
I've forgotten hook size, but 6 sc = 2 linear inches.
Hat Crown:
Rnd 1: Ch2. In ch farthest from hook, sc 9. Sl st to join.
Rnd 2: Sc twice in each st around, for total of 18 st. Join.
Rnd 3: [Sc in 1st st, 2sc in next st] around, for total of 27 st. Join.
Rnd 4: Repeat rnd 3, for total of 40 st. You may have to add or delete a stitch somewhere to get the correct count. Join.
Rnd 5: Sc around, for total of 40 st. Join.
Rnd 6: Repeat rnd 3, for total of 60 st. Join.
Rnds 7 & 8: Repeat rnd 5, for total of 60 st. Join.
Rnd 9: Repeat rnd 3, for total of 90 st. Join.
Hat Sides:
Rnd 10: In back bar, sc around. Join.
Rnd 11: Ch 3. In same st, dc 4. [Skip 2 st, sc in 3rd st, skip 2st, 5 dc in 6th st] around. Join.
Rnd 12: Sl st to top of shell. Sc. [5 dc in next sc of previous rnd, sc in top of next shell of previous rnd] around. Join.
Rnds 13 through 15: Sl st to top of shell. Sc in back bar. [5 dc in back bar of next sc of previous rnd, sc in back bar of top of next shell of previous rnd] around. Join.
Rnd 16: [Sc, hdc in next 2 st, dc in sc of previous rnd, hdc in next 2 st] around. Join.
Hat Brim:
Rnd 17: Sc around. Join.
Rnd 18: Sc around, adding an extra sc at 4 points approximately equidistant around the hat. Join.
Rnd 19: Repeat Rnd 17.
Rnd 20: Repeat Rnd 18.
Rnd 21: Repeat Rnd 17. Finish off.
