[identity profile] darkmagix.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] craftgrrl
Due to popular demand, I decided to make a tutorial on how to make my ever-so-popular starburst wrapper wallets.

These are fun and easy to make, much more so than duct tape wallets due to their colorful-ness and that being starburst wrappers they are waxed, so mistakes are undone easily.

By the way, the original post of my starburst wallet can be found at http://www.livejournal.com/community/craftgrrl/5570430.html

Materials:
  • about 20 starburst wrappers
  • packing tape
  • scissors
  • a ruler
  • Tic-Tacs (because you can almost live on them.)
  • iPod for background music
  • pH paper, because it was randomly in the book box I used to store the other materials for wallet making

Note: iPod, Tic Tacs, and pH paper are not needed for completion of wallet

Firstly, straighten out all of your wrappers and decide on the way you want them to look on the wallet. Just a little hint for those who are almost as nit picky as me, just try and make sure all the wrappers will be facing in the proper direction. Dont have just one facing the other way. The layout of the wallet is formed of a 3x4 rectangle as seen above.

Then cut yourself a piece of tape, about a foot and a bit long I suppose. Lay it sticky side up on your working surface.

Lay your first row of wrappers face down on this. Try and line up all the edges very nicely.

Fold the excess tape around over the back of the sheet you just made.

Just a random hint I'd like to pop in here that I find helpful. Starburst wrappers have kind of a waxy finish, as you've most likely noticed by now. This is good for when working with the packing tape because it peels off easily if you make a mistake. I like to take an extra wrapper and use it as a placeholder on the roll of tape so I don't need to go 'hunting' for the end of it each time I need a piece.

Cut another piece of tape. Lay the uncovered part of your previous row on it. Press down to remove air bublles.

Lay down your next row of wrappers. etc.

Continue the process above until you have a full sheet (three wrappers by four wrappers).

Fold the sheet in half, the way so the longest side is in half.

Open the fold. Attach tape to half of each of the sides that have a crease on them (which convieniently divides the side in half). As you can see, I used some extra wrappers to stop the tape from sticking to the table.

Used the tape placed in the previous step to hold the folded sides together. Also secure this side on the outside of the wallet with some additional tape.

Fold the wallet in half to make it have a lovely wallet shape.

You now have the basic wallet shape made. You could stop here, but you'd have a pretty crappy wallet. So... Ill show you how to make some pockets for your credit cards and whatnot now. You can add other things too, like coin pouches (basically a pocket shown below with a cover on it) or an I.D. slot (a pouch with only tape/plastic in the front instead of wrappers).

Make two new mini sheets with the dimensions seen above, 2x2 and 1x2.

Tape the smaller sheet into the middle of the longer sheet.

Fold over the extra flaps of the longer piece.

Place tape on the back of this By attaching it to the two extra flaps, not the actual back.

Stick it onto the inside of the wallet on one of the halves.

Secure with tape.

Now you're done! *Yay!*
