Dog collar/leash?

I've already looked through a bunch of things, but I thought I might ask for more opinions before I do this. I want to decorate a dog collar and leash, but I don't know the best way to go about it. My first thought was to create a stencil the right size and just spray paint it. Then I thought there might be a better option that would last longer. I have a sort of fabric pen, but it doesn't stay very well. Is there something I could use that would be pretty durable? Or should I just try to sew the pattern - if so, any tips on working with that type of material?
