low-fraying fabric?

i'm looking to applique a skirt with some leaves and branches that i'll cut out of some fabric. i'm looking for some low-fraying fabric that isn't felt or fleece. i've seen some clothing in stores that has cut-out leaves & flowers & the edges aren't hemmed or stitched closely (sorry, i'm not that familiar with sewing terms!). it looks like this:

i don't mind having a rough edge, i just don't want it to fall apart. can anyone help me & suggest a fabric?? thanks!
