Machine Sewing Thread

I am pretty new to machine sewing. I was wondering if you can use those large spools of thread on a regular sewing machine? The ones that come on cardboard tubes not little spools? My machine only has a little arm for the thread spool to to be on, but it looks like it can come out or be removed. Is there a special arm you need to buy?
