So I made another attempt at this bag:

I think I like this one a lot better then the last one.
What I did was change the colors a little. I did the background in the light purple (double strands) and I did the flower in white (double strands)
I added 2 more rows and instead of the wooden handles, I added a crocheted handle. Then I just crocheted another row to add more strength to the handle.
I believe the pattern calls for 9 rows and I did 11.
It is pretty sturdy I think. You won't be able to cary heavy stuff in it, but you could get away with your everyday stuff.

I like this one better because you can see the flower and it doesn't just blend into the background.
