Necklace Material?

Hi everyone! I'm looking to find material for necklaces, but I strongly dislike metals. I was thinking of a thin thin suede/leather rope, but I'm unsure where to locate such a thing. I've been looking around in jewelry stores such as Claire's to find something that I could salvage the rope from, but to no avail. Does anyone have any ideas? I was thinking hemp, but the hemp I found was all wound up and seemed impossible to straighten out enough to be a suitable necklace!
