Ok guys! Sorry it has taken me so long! I was hoping to include pictures, but without a digital camera it is hard and none of my friends have been around lately. So instead of waiting even longer I just made a text only tutorial. Well, without any further ado!

Hollowed Book Tutorial

Materials:

Hardcover Book
Mod Podge
Small Brush
Exacto knife (or similar blade)
Straight Edge
Wax Paper
Heavy Weights (books, weights, you know, whatever)
Velcro or Small Magnet

Note: Be sure AHEAD OF TIME that the book is the correct size for what you want to put in it! I made the book specifically to hold my iPod and its accessories and measured these and the book before cutting.

First Step:
Determine where you want to start cutting; either on the very first page, a few pages in, somewhere in the middle, whatever. Be sure to keep these away from the portion of the book you will be gluing because it will be next to impossible to remedy this.

Place a sheet of wax paper between the front cover of the book and the pages (or after the first few pages, wherever you want to start cutting) so that these do not stick together. You will want to be able to open the book later! You do NOT need to glue individual pages together, this will actually make cutting harder!

Second Step:
Generously coat the outer edges of the pages with Mod Podge (via small brush). Be sure you do not glue the wax paper in. You can actually put the wax paper in now if you want. Once this step is complete, place the book on a flat surface and position the weights on top. (I used my complete volumes of Sherlock Holmes and an old typewriter, they did the trick nicely.) Let the book dry (about 15-20 minutes).

Third step:
Determine where the hole/s will be. Outline them in pencil on the first page you want to cut. Take the straight edge and place on the line and carefully begin cutting on the outline. The first cut should take out a few pages. After a while you will not need the straight edge any more.

Simply keep cutting along the edges until the hole is as deep as you need or want it to be. The corners are probably the most difficult part of this project. I found that a new, sharp blade really helped and if bits got stuck I used a pair of pliers to help me pull them out.

If you have small spaces between the holes the pages are likely to rip so just be careful.

For the Velcro/magnet, cut a hole to the dimensions of the closure and keep the hole very shallow. Deep enough so that the book will close right, but shallow enough so that they do their job. I saved this part for last.

Fourth step:
Put another layer of Mod Podge all around the book and on the holes to help keep the pages together. Place under weights again until dry and you are satisfied with the flatness of the pages (they tend to curl with the moisture from the Mod Podge).

My end result!
