Formica countertops

I'm helping my friend re-do her half bathroom into something a little more funky. We've got most of it worked out except the countertop. Does anyone know anything you can do with formica (that sort of plasticy bathroom countertop stuff)? Are there any type of paints you can use on it? Any ideas are appreciated.
