baby cloth book

i was thinking about sewing my own cloth book using my baby's old onsies.

i am wondering, though, do i need to put anthing in the middle (like it is done with quilts) to make the "pages" sturdier? or can i just sew a bunch of sqares and it will hold that way?

also, i'm new to the sewing machine. is the cloth used to make baby clothes sturdy enough to be altered?
