Crushed velvet or similar effect
Sep. 20th, 2005 06:08 amNevermind the mirror making question, looks wayyyy to complicated. I'll stick with yard sales.
I want to make a winter dress out of crushed fabric like this or this. (Especially the second one OMG DROOL.) Not horribly icky panne velvet, nasty cheap stuff often found in cheap Halloween costumes and crappy goth clothing. If you look at the links, you'll be noticing that what I have linked to is QUITE expensive for something I'd need 3-3.5 yards of.
So unless one of you knows where I can get such things for about half the price, I'm thinking I can sort of imitate the effect with some creative dyeing. Thick velvet's a pain to sew with and it's often a hard to dye mix of fibers, so I'm thinking I'll get the cotton velveteen from dharmatrading.com, dye it a lighter base color (wine red or copper/bronze), then scrunch it up tightly on a pole almost shibori-style and spray another darker color of dye over it (black or really dark copper/bronze/brown) to get that crinkly look. Sound like it would work?
