sewing tulle

craftgrrlhello all... it's been a while since i've posted anything but i've been lurking to admire and be inspired (never fails, with all the talented folks here!).
i am getting a jump on making my daughter's halloween costume - she's going to be a fairy - and, being a not terribly experienced sewer, i thought i should ask the best way to sew layers of tulle into a skirt. i'm going for a sort of long tutu with raggedy layers effect and have bought a couple of different colors of tulle and some velvet as well (to add to the flower fairy-ness and give it some added texture). any suggestions? thanks so much in advance! pictures to follow, once i finish the costume!
p.s. i did check the FAQ/memories and didn't see anything on tulle..
