Thanks so much to everyone that helped me with my crochet question earlier this week. I have another one, but more yarn related. I have about ten million balls of pattons classic merino wool. I was going to try and use them up for christmas presents. According to the package, it's a medium weight, but when I go to make this hat http://hometown.aol.com/JSchlossma/ezdcc.html I find that the yarn is clearly to small a gauge. Is it ok just to use two strands? I have almost no access to a decent yarn store (there are two here in Buffalo. One is VERY expensive and a bit stuck up, and the other I can't find to save my life) and don't really have the time (or any money!) to wait for an online order, although if the pattern is going to look goofy this way, then I'll make time!

Any other suggestions?
