Cloak clasps question and cloak pattern

craftgrrlAnyone have any experience making your own cloaks? I am in the process of making a wool cloak for a live-action role-playing event, also suitable for renaissance gear (though not something I'd wear to any ren faire in the summer!) We've been using just reinforced gromets with lace to tie them, which worked fine, but I am interested in an actual clasp.
I'm wondering what you use for clasps for them? I've been looking online through google searches and in the memories here and haven't found any good advice. I've also found some really expensive ones and some really cheap ones ($3-$325!), and am wondering what I should be investing in and what the pros and cons are of the different styles. Base metal or silver or brass? Hook styles? Do they ever fall apart or come unhooked with lots of movement? How much should a reaonably good one cost me, and where can I find some?
We bought a set of a dozen wool disaster blankets and turned them into hooded cloaks for our LARP group. Turned out kind of snazzy for the budget and time involved - we needed to make a bunch of cloaks in two weeks, and the set of twelve blankets was $60.

As you can probably see, the size of the person makes a difference in how these hang. The parts can be altered slightly to fit different people, but the blankets are all the same size. My job was cutting them out, not sewing them, so I can't offer much advice on that part. Just these two tips: a bigger hood falls lower over the face for sneaky appearances, and if the blanket has a hem on one side, you might want to use the hem on the front seam and where the hood opens.
