nifty knitter question

craftgrrlso how do they work exactly? what do you do? i saw one when i was at michael's the other day, and it was not what i expected.
*everybody* seems to be talking about them lately. and i don't just mean in this community. i heard multiple people in michael's talking about it while i was there. like, at least 2-3 separate conversations about the thing. so i'm curious! it looks a bit like a really big 'spool knitter' (does anybody remember those?) - is that what it's like? do i need to get one? is it much faster than just plain old knitting? or is it just for people who don't knit?
