book binding

I've been buying a lot of old classic books from the library. I recently started book altering. And I wanted to make a spiral notebook out of a old library book I bought but fill it with different types of papers(not the actually book paper:))...I'm not a great sewing person So I wanted know if there was a way to book bind using different types of paper(I will be using the book cover as the cover).

I saw that there's some sort of key ring(or something along those lines) that people use to hold journals together instead of spirals or sewing.

any ideas would be great.
