I cut the pieces out like this: (see top white illustration)

and then eventually realized how messed up the hem was.  I've looked around and figured out that it ought to be more like the bottom, dark illustration.  I took out what hemming there was, and tried to fold it up to something reasonably even, but it's very wobbly and I feel lost.  Am I making this harder than it needs to be? Is there something I'm still missing?

<<<<<I folded the bottom edge of this up, trying to level it out into a curve and ocassionally measuring down from the waistband, resulting in this >>>>>>>>  which now that I look at it, is awfully wobbly.

and this, as well.

I also have a waistband piece, not shown, because I didn't think it was relevant to the problem.  I'm sorry some of the photos are blurry, it's late at night, so even with flash the light isn't ideal.

Thanks in advance for your help and comments.

He is very annoyed at my attempts to continue crafting.

misc FYI: the fabric are both shirts, cotton tshirt material.  the pattern is tigers and starbursts. I believe I got that shirt from delia's nearly 10 years ago

EDIT: apologies, I just forgot to put the cut in when I'd finished the rest!
