sweet red yarn?

i'm going on a roadtrip at the very end of this month, from orlando to indiana, then from new york to canada to d.c. to one of the carolinas to wherever else to back home in orlando. and during all of this time on the road, since i'm 19 and still haven't decided i need a driver's license yet and therefore can't share in the joy of driving, i want to knit a really simple awesome red scarf to pass the time. some bright, awesome, maybe deep red that is soft and happy to wear.

so the question: before i throw myself into the internet or michael's craft store, does anyone have a favorite brand of yarn, or a favorite shade of beautiful red, or a favorite place (either online or on land) to get yarn from? [if it's an internet deal, i need it to ship to me before june 30th.]
