decoupage collage

I love decoupage. I hate decoupage glue. See, I made my friend the above collage (on small canvas board) as part of her birthday gift (I'll be giving it to her today) and as many times as I smoothed down the pictures after gluing, I still got those wrinkles in the finished product. Does anyone have any tips on how to get a smoother finish on decoupage projects (or is that the whole appeal of decoupage, because I really don't know)?
