My first atempt at embossing

In case anyone was wondering, to emboss something you stamp your paper, cover that in embossing powder, shake off the excess and then heat it with a heat gun. That leaves you with a raised/textured image. It's pretty nifty.
Questions:
*Can I emboss things other than paper? Has anyone tried? Any tips? I'm thinking clothes, glass jars, wooden boxes and so on.
*Has anyone tried embossing with stencils instead of stamps? It just seems so much easier/cheaper to make stencils than make stamps.
