Crafting: what not to do
Jul. 18th, 2006 12:08 pmI bought some clay to attempt a birthday gift for a friend. I got Sculpey and Jason bought some other brands. I am a complete idiot and did not read the label before baking. As it would happen, his brand was not baking clay!!! So my project melted:

You can see on the white where I ran my finger across it and messed it up after I took it out of the oven. It had the texture of marshmallow cream! I hope to be able to salvage it, but I'm not sure I can. After I let it sit a while, it went back to it's original moldable state. I sprayed clear varnish over and it seemed to stiffen a bit, but with a bit of pressure, is still moldable. I'm going to spray it down again when I get home and hope for the best. I had great plans for that thing! If I can stiffen it up, I'm gonna draw a dead face on the stalk x_x
After that, I switched over to my Sculpey clay and just started playing. I wanted some apples, but could only form one right. So I thought I could turn them into cherries. I had a green stem connecting the two that had a little hole so I could make it (+ more objects/beads) into a little purse charm or something. Unfortunately, I didn't make the stem stable enough and it fell over during baking, which still could have worked, but being the annoyingly inpatient person I am, I tried to straighten it out and it snapped off. Now I'm back to having an apple & a cherry*ish blob:

This is a mirror Jason did for my sister. FallOutBoy/OverCastKids. Because she's EMO!:

Currently in progress: We're making an attempt at casting resin. As far as I know, no luck so far, but I'm going to try again when I'm home. Maybe he'll have figured it out by then! Also, I'm in the middle of a round baby blanket a co-worker is going to pay me for. I showed him one I had completed and he asked for one a bit bigger, as mine was sized for a newborn. You can see it just in the corner of the apple photo ^ It's baby blue/for a boy.
Upcoming projects: Paper mache bowls and piggy banks!!!
