freeform stitch

craftgrrlI have been using a sewing machine for quite some time, yet I have only used it to do straight stitches... like along an edge. I see people on TV doing some kind of free-form stitching..... like they can move the fabric around in circles and stuff to make patterns, without the machine pulling the fabric in one direction. (Hope that makes sense). Is this a standard setting? Can someone tell me how to do it? I have a Singer Touch&Sew 648 if that makes a difference.
