best yarn for an afghan?

soo. best acrylic yarn to make an afghan out of? i've never made one so give my your opinions. carron vs. redheart? something else? preferably something i can get in michaels or joanns. this is for a guy so preferably something that washes well. or maybe that will never need to be washed.
