I have a question!

I'm have a plain pair of vans slip ons. They are canvas shoes and I want to spice them up. I read some entries about converse but I didn't exactly get my answer.

Question: If you are painting on canvas shoes, should I use acrylic or fabric paint? And should I use a varnis after to prevent cracking?
