Art Journalling - Gesso question

Hi, I've checked the memories and couldn't find anything on this.

I want to art journal but am having trouble with the gesso. It just seems to be making the pages just soggy and heavy and very bendy. This is after being left to dry overnight. can anyone give me any hints. Am i putting it on to thickly? Is there a way to get it thinner?
