Nov. 2nd, 2006 04:18 pmHi Craftgrrls!
I haven't posted in ages, but I thought this would be a really fun opportunity to do so!
I made Halloween costumes for myself and my Chihuahua mix puppy.
My costume is an alteration of a costume that my Mum made for my sister about 17 years ago, which I had stored in the basement. Since polyester fleece isn't biodegradable, it was pretty much as good as new! My sister was big for her age, and I'm a bit small, so it fit me in most ways. However, it was too short in the body, and I didn't like the style of the head piece. So, I openned up the inside leg seams and re-sewed them into a skirt (I'll edit this later with pics of that part). And I trimmed the neck-covering off of the head piece and put some darts at the nape area so that it was more snug to the head like a bonnet. I also put some felt flowers on the bonnet to up the cuteness factor. (I think it worked.)
As for the puppy costume:
I had bought a few American Apparel doggy t-shirts (size small) on sale at my local yuppie dog boutique, so that I could train the pup to put up with being clothed before the harsh Canadian winter starts and she *needs* to wear clothes. I bought the red & blue one cause it was on sale, even though I *hate* those colours. Every time she wore it, I thought of Superman -- so the transition was obvious. My puppy needed underoos! I looked up a Superman crest online, traced it off my computer screen, and then constructed it from felt & hot glue. (Even though I was a pro seamstress for about 6 years, I hot glued it to the shirt instead of sewing it, cause it's a freakin' costume and doesn't need to be washable.) Then I sewed a little red polar fleece cape onto the neckline, for dramatic effect and to keep her warm when trick or treating.
The dog costume construction took about 10 minutes, and the human costume alteration took about 30 minutes.
Skip ahead to this part of the post if you want to cut to the chase and soak up the cuteness:

That's it!
Enjoy!
