Matisse Scarf Question

craftgrrlAlrighty all you scarf lovers out there. I am going to crochet a scarf for my mother for christmas which has 
on it. IT's her favorite piece of artwork ever. My plan is to first crochet a scarf in the color of the background and then at one end affix the other pieces of artwork, since my crochet skills are not yet to the point where I could create a graph and crochet it right in.
Have any of you ever done applique of some sort on a crocheted scarf? What do you think the best way to do it is... felt? fabric? cross stitch? Which would look most like the artwork, yet would still be functional?
