Question about packaging and tiny sample gifts.

I am sending earrings and although I already have a little earring card and a nice white padded box, this seems too boring to me. I am planning on including a small note business cardy thing and a free sample gift. My questions are:

1. What would are cheap, easy, fast, tiny little gifty ideas to give away for free? I was thinking glueing buttons which match the earrings onto a hair clip, for example.
2. What are attractive packaging that doesn't involve paper (I'm into recycling) or fabric (I'm cheap.) I'm thinking ribbon, is that too boring?
