buttonhole help

I'm finishing a Christmas gift and was about to make a buttonhole but I can't find the owner's manual for the machine anywhere and it's been a while since I've done it the last time.. I have a Brother XL-5020, and it has a buttonhole foot where you put the button in and it's supposed to make the buttonhole the right size.

I have selected the buttonhole feature and the buttonhole stitch length, but it just keeps sewing on the same spot. If I make it go back a little first and then forward, it sews the right side of the buttonhole correctly, but then it starts sewing on the same spot again when it's at the end of the buttonhole. So do you know how I could get it sew the ends and the left side, too?

I'm getting a little nervous with this because there's not much time left.. I'd be so grateful if you guys could help me.
