craftgrrl | Barbie Makeover

So I went out and bought a Barbie for about $7.00 and it's all Fairy Princess right now. I'd like to make clothes and change the Barbie's all over look into something like this "Christian Dior 1947 New Look" Barbie. It's for a school project on the French fashion designer Dior and I think I can do most of it already. The pleated full skirt and jacket will be sewn with old scraps. I'll use some old tights for her tights and make her stilettos black instead of the baby blue it already is.

So my dilemma is how to make that straw hat. Any suggestons or ideas?
I also don't know how I'll get those gloves for her, do you think the tights would make good gloves?
Also if you have any patterns to make Barbie clothes that would be helpful!
