help needed!

I want to decorate some canvas sneakers (like Converse, but not sweatshop made) with a Dylon fabric marker, but the marker instructions tell me: "To fix the colour, cover the designed area with a clean cotton cloth and iron on a very hot setting for 1-2 minutes."

I'm guessing this would be nigh on impossible to do given that it's shoes and not a flat surface I'm decorating. Will not fixing it matter since I won't be machine washing the shoes? Or do you think that I'll be walking in the rain one day and the designs will run?

Any advice would be much appreciated :o)
