First time post
May. 14th, 2007 08:35 pmAs if being obsessed with knitting wasn't enough of a hobby, I took up sewing a few weeks ago.
So I started by cutting up an old t-shirt to make this:

Not bad, but very home-made looking because the edges aren't seamed. I used the halter pattern from OhMyStars
Then I got a bit more adventurous and made this by sewing the motif from a too-small t-shirt onto a £2 Primark boob tube:

I'm really glad I managed to rescue this t-shirt because it's ace!
And then I experimented by sewing the bottom half of one top onto the top half of another:

The polka-dot one was too short in the body but it fits perfectly now :-)
Then at the weekend I bought a mini sewing machine from Superdrug for just £7.99! It works perfectly and came ready-threaded. I thought I'd find it tricky because I haven't used one since I made a terrible pair of purple cullottes in Textiles class when I was 13. But it wasn't that hard, and once I'd got the hang of it there was no stopping me...
I started by making a patchwork cushion cover out of some squares my grandma gave me:

Now I just need to think of someone who'd want one of these for a birthday present, because they're way too chintzy for me ;-)
And then I made a bag from a men's Primark t-shirt:

I'm really proud of this and so pleased about how well it turned out. Yay!
It's much more instantly satisfying than knitting, and better for the summer months (because who needs hats and scarves when June's around the corner?). I'm definitely going to do some more :-D
