Prepping fabric

Hi...I've been a member of Craftgrrl for a while, but this is my first post. I have a question...I'm about to try my hand at quilting and I just machine washed my fat quarters. What can I do to keep them from fraying and getting all tangled up in the future? Was I suppose to take pinking shears to the edges first? The material is 100% novelty cotton..found in the quilting section at my fabric store.

Any fabric prepping advice would be appreciated! I will post my first project when I'm done!
