Jul. 14th, 2007 12:01 amI work for a public library and help run our summer reading programs (3 different programs, 6 hours of events a week for about 7 weeks). Tonight was our third teen summer reading program event and we had a local artist come in and teach a workshop on altered books. I've done collage art before (I make handmade journals), but never tried an altered book, so of course I had to get in on the fun!

First off, apologies for my crappy photography skills AND the quality of my camera -- it was cheap :/. This is the cover of my book -- it was supposed to be a self-portrait book, so I put a Goddess figure to represent myself. The black and white represents the many differences in the world. The spiral wire -- and the spiral theme in general throughout the book -- represents the way I view the world -- that it is a circle/spiral and continually goes on. The feather is because books give you wings. Oh, and I used a book about nature because of my religious beliefs (I'm Pagan) and my affinity for nature.

Inside... the rainbow and silver themes represent my mind and personality because I consider myself a very rainbow kind of person and I identify very strongly with the color silver. There's another spiral metal coil in the middle, but it's hard to see. The whole inside represents my mind -- it's very full of glitter and sparkles and windows and spirals and colors and such. I put the dragonfly paper in there because I consider the dragonfly to be one of my totem animals. All in all, I had quite the fun time and I hope to continue adding to my book!
