Sewing Machine help

craftgrrlHi this is going to be another one of those terrible non-photo posts, sorry.
my mom gave me a sewing machine. It's a Janome harmony 8080. Problem is she didn't have the manual. I've written Janome, and they have told me to contact sears, so I have written sears and I am waiting to find out if they can sell me a copy of the manual.
But I'm anxious to start messing around with the machine doing basic stitches and the like, but there is a problem. When I turn my machine on it says SP in the display window, and the only things it will do are beep at me if I press any of the buttons, and if I push the peddle it makes the winder spin. I've tried filling a new bobbin and replacing it. I've tried rethreading the machine, but short of that I'm stuck. Do any of you wonderful folks have any ideas?
