i've checked the memories and a few crochet how-to websites, and for the life of me, i can't figure out how to crochet ribbing for the bottom few rows of a hat. i've figured most of the hat so far, but this bit i can't quite understand.

Ribbing
Ch 3(4-5) loosely.
Row 1: Sc in second ch from hook and in next 1(2-3) chs: 2(3-4) sc.
Row 2: Slip st in next 2 dc on hat, turn; skip slip sts, sc in back loop only of next 2(3-4) sc: 2(3-4) sc.
Row 3: Ch 1, turn; sc in next 2(3-4) sc.
Rows 4-23(31-35): Repeat Rows 2 and 3,10(14-16) times.
Row 24(32-36): Slip st in next dc and in same st as joining, turn; skip slip sts, sc in next 4 sc; finish off leaving a length for sewing.

so instead of working in rounds, i need to turn the hat sideways and work in rows.

what do the numbers in brackets means? i understand it usually means repeat of some sort, but it's not making any sense to me... and then TURN (does that mean flip the whole piece around?) back loop, as in previous stitch?

help please... my acrylic yarn is starting to get fuzzy from all the attempts.

thanks in advance!

ohh.. it's a ladybug hat for my friend's three day old baby, and i'd like to keep her head warm. most friends thought she was going to be a boy, so she received a lot of green and yellow and blue items... nothing really 'girlie'.
