I noticed a few weeks ago that someone posted in Craftgrrrl about "rice for peace," in which you send little baggies of rice to Tony Blair or George Bush and ask for it to be sent to the starving people of Iraq. I have a few comments on this method of activism:
First, these bags of rice are thrown out once (or even) before they reach the office of the respective political leaders. This is a WASTE of perfectly good rice, so you're only ameliorating the problem of starving people. A better option is to donate food or money to UNICEF, which is a UN-sponsored organisation, which means that the food will actually where it's needed, since many countries are doing MUCH WORSE than Iraq.
Just some food for thought for everyone.
