Just a link the people here may find useful, no pics, no cool projects, no uncool projects, sorry:

JN Zippers & Supplies Corporation has an excellent "specifications" page that gives clear diagrams and labels for the parts of zippers.  I stumbled across it when I was looking for luggage zippers online.  The "thing you pull" is called a "puller", for instance, but the bit that stacks the teeth (which is really the "chain") to close or open it is called the "slider body".  The separating zipper is also known as an "open end zipper", and you join the ends when you close it using a "box and pin" mechanism to get the puller on track. :-)

It sure helps to know what to call the zipper bits when you have to tell a customer why you can't possibly FIX the darned thing.

cross-posted to the usual suspects.
