First Project!
Nov. 10th, 2007 06:06 pmRecently, I went to the local Renaissance Festival. Had lots of fun and saw a new craft: weaving using just one strand. I was immediately intrigued, especially when I got to try it out myself. It was so easy, I knew I had a new crafting obsession. When I got home that night I utilized my Google-Fu and found a great web-page that has tons of great information for beginners. Since I don't have a workshop to build a loom, I started investigating places to buy one. Found that Hillcreek Fiber Studio is in Columbia, MO and they developed the Spriggs Adjustable Frame Looms ... So, I drove the next Saturday and picked up a couple of looms (ok, one of each of the big looms and a 2 ft travel loom for teaching...) Unfortunately, after I got the triangle loom set up, I spent the rest of the day untangling yarn and spinning it onto my new Royal wool winder... Can I just say, this is my new FAVORITE TOY!!!!!
Anyway, I started weaving a 7' triangle shawl Sunday Morning and finished Wednesday morning. I was using Bernat Chunky, a yarn that stated it was bulky weight blue variegated acrylic yarn... Yeah, not so chunky... I used only a single yarn and there is a lot of open space (1/8th - 3/16th of an inch)... Though it did look better after going through the washer and dryer.

Now, technically, I didn't have to put a fringe on it as this is a self-binding weaving method, but it just didn't look finished without it. I have to say, not bad for a first project!
Anyway, here's a picture of the finished project:

And, as is traditional for all first projects, I'm going to give it to Mom. (^_^)
