Canning Jars --> Lamps

craftgrrlI was given 2 dozen 1/2 gallon size canning jars and I want to make them into lamps. I do can fruits and vegetables but NEVER need to open a 1/2 gallon size of anything so the jars aren't of practical use to me.
The easy part is putting the lamp fixture to the lid and filling the jar with marbles, rocks, buttons, fabric scraps, etc. I want the electric cord to come out the bottom side of the jar. Does anyone have any ieas on how you drill/cut small cord diameter size hole in the jars without breaking them? Thanks!
