How to soften acrylic knits?

craftgrrlNew to knitting...so I made a simple straight knit scarf with acrylic yarn, I believe it's Carlton? Anyway, the stuff is not that soft. I was thinking about soaking it in a bath of fabric softener or vinager overnight to soften...anyone else try this? Other suggestions? The memories section in knitting didn't have anything...Thanks in advance!
