looking for some help on making collars

i was wondering if anyone has any knowledge on making dog/cat collars from leather or faux leather?  i found a great source for faux leather, but i have never made my own collar before...  i have a good sturdy sewing machine, and that's about it.  after that, i need help!  where do i find supplies and all that jazz... thanks to everyone in advance!
