[identity profile] elfie-elfie.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] craftgrrl
Inspired by [profile] medias_res' post with the monster blanket, my daughter "Needed" one of these for another friend's birthday gift.  However, with only two days' notice for THIS party, and it was a SLEEPOVER (very first for most of the girls), and given the difficulty working with the fluffy furry stuff at every turn (losing pins in it, having it slide all over the effing place, and especially wrestling the sheer size of the thing through the whole process, I made this one.  But the teeth had to go, my daughter insisted.

Let's start you off with a picture of the fleece backing.  (Sidenote: I couldn't use the flash on the camera, lest I awaken the blanket monster's first victim.  Sorry for the colour imbalance.  I corrected it as best I could in editing.)

It's kind of fun shopping for fleece when you're really tired.  Especially when it's rolled inside-out on the bolt, and you're looking at it upside-down. (I thought it was printed all over with the word "queer", ok? OK.  Moving on.)

Without the teeth, the Blanket Monster turned into quite the coquettish comforter.  The mouth is made of scrap black sweatshirt fleece, the eyes and tongue are scraps of felt.

Sniffing her first victim out... (that'd be my husband napping)

*slurp* Tastes like chicken... but you didn't make my mouth big enough!

LOLMonster: I can has mashed peas?  (This shot actually gives a true representation of the blanket's colours.)

This is a queen-sized bed -- see how big this thing is!  I wasn't sure if the new-minted 10-year-old had a double or a twin bedframe, so I erred on the side of generosity.  In retrospect, I think I should have tied it in a few more places, but there just wasn't time to fiddle with it.  I was also working on a commissioned men's shirt, and had to clear the sewing table as quickly as possible.  The girl's mother sews, so hopefully she'll realize it needs tying, and take care of it with some yarn or embroidery floss.

This stuff was yummy-soft, so soft even the family dog was all over it, I heard.  I still have some left, and I'm thinking: cat-beds!
