Marking Vinyl

I'm working with some black vinyl for a bustle (the kind of vinyl with a fabric-type back for costumes and such) and I need to mark the right (shiny) side of the fabric to make some pleats. Should i use wax based marking paper? Or should i buy a fine line silver sharpie? Or would i just be better off marking the wrong side and trying to make the pleats from the reverse side? thank you SO much!
