Hi all! I'm a new member, saw the comm on the spotlight page and couldn't resist :) I've always loved working with crafts, and would love to hone my still pretty newbie skills into something that actually produces worthwhile stuff ^_^

I'm currently in the process of teaching myself crochet, and picked up the chain, slip stitch, and single crochet last night. I'm learning the half double right now, and will hopefully move onto the other stitches tonight. My question is, does anyone have any tips? Any secrets of the trade? My biggest problem so far is learning to tell the chains apart, and my left hand gets cramped sometimes from holding the string. I know that last bit will get better with time though. Also, any favorite patterns that would be great for beginners to practice on?

The other question I had was on sewing machines. I happened to mention to the boyfriend last night that I almost bought the stuff to make a throw out of Green Bay material, but the size would have taken me forever to hand stitch. That resulted in a whole planning session on where best to put the machine, and would I actually use it, and you get the general idea :D I've worked with sewing machines when I was younger - my grandmother taught me sewing, knitting, and basic crafts, and I grew up on her antique sewing machine - but the new ones completely mystify me. Any recommendations for good brands, best prices, what kind of thread I need, should I buy a kit to go with the machine? Basically, what would you do, if you were going out to buy a sewing machine?

TIA, crafters, for any and all advice and suggestions! I'm very excited about the crochet, I've knitted for some time now but have always been drawn to crochet, and the idea of making my own blankets is beyond cool :)

ETA: THANK YOU so much to everyone for the incredibly helpful tips and suggestions, on both the sewing machines and crocheting. I've learned a ton from this post, and I'm just getting started. Y'all rock!! :)

Inspired by one of the comments on the earlier post about interesting cross stitch patterns, I checked out urbanthreads.com and now I'm dying to get a machine that could do that kind of embroidery.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a good sewing machine that can take those kinds of files, or any machines that would be best to stay away from? About how much would I be looking at spending to get one?

ETA: I also have a Silhouette Cameo that can cut fabric into various shapes, so I'd like to be able to do some machine appliqué also.

Why is it when every time I'm nearly done a project and on a deadline to get it completed, does my sewing machine break down? This has happened with some regularity in the last year or so and it's gotten really frustrating, especially since my 'other' machine, which was taken in for repair, isn't working either.

Here's what happened last night/this morning as I was finishing an outfit I wanted to wear today. Everything was going along fine when suddenly the machine seized up, that annoying beeping sound occurred and the needle wouldn't go up or down and I had to pull the fabric out from under the presser foot and needle, finding a bird's nest of bobbin thread when I managed to get it free. I took the bobbin out, as well as the bobbin case, and used my brush to clean out some fuzz and dust, put it all back...and the same thing happened. Three or four more times. I was literally 3 seams away from finishing the project. Argh! I'm not sure how to fix this. Usually after doing it over and over again a sufficient number of times, things just start working again. I hate to have to get it serviced again, especially since I have two projects for other people that I was planning on doing this week.

Any suggestions? My machine is a Singer 2638, which came out for Singer's 150th anniversary.

ETA: Thanks for all the suggestions -- tension it is. I adjusted it and now it's sewing again. I had to wear something else yesterday but now at least I can do those projects I promised for other people this week. I will never understand how machines can be set the same as always and just suddenly not work. Cars, sewing machines... oh well, thanks again to everyone who responded.

sooo i used to have a problem with my lower bobbin thread, but that was solved forever ago. NOW it's doing it again. i've rethreaded the bobbin, switched it over and back again, and it just won't catch. i bought new needles earlier and it's not that either. i've tried different tension settings.. nope. now i'm noticing that the needle isn't pulling the top thread at all, only sewing the slack between it and just pumping up and down after the slack is gone. i don't know what to do! i really hope this is a simple fix! i really don't want to have to take it somewhere to get it repaired.

i've even opened up the bottom where the bobbin is and it's not dusty and there isn't any dust or fabric stuck anywhere. helppp!!

I can't drop the feed dogs on my little Janome sewing machine, and I want to do some free-form sewing. Does anyone know how I can do that with the feed dogs up?

Sorry I don't have a project to share - I'm in creative doldrums right now - but with all the "I want a new sewing machine" posts happening, I thought I'd mention this one.  The Oakville Sewing Centre near Toronto, Ontario is doing an inventory and floor model blow-out.  Sergers going for $350CD: THAT kind of blow-out.  Janome and Bernina brands.

http://www.oakvillesewing.com/

They can't advertise their prices on their webpage because of their dealership agreements with the manufacturers, but you can sign up for their newsletter to get the prices.

If you're in Southern Ontario, take a look. I think they do international shipping, if you think that may be worthwhile.  I mustn't go there myself because... well... I mustn't.
