craftgrrl | Old socks as stuffing!

Has anyone used old socks / rags as toy or pillow stuffing? Sewing isn't usually my thing, but I've just had a wardrobe clearout and, having recently played Portal, thought I could combine the two and recycle the millions of worn, hole-y socks I've found and attempt a plushie companion cube.

Any tips on using something like that for stuffing? Can I just use them whole or do I need to shred them first? Or should I stop being so cheap and buy some proper stuffing because this won't work?
