Since it's been a while....
Apr. 14th, 2008 11:41 amThrift store clock remodel and some 'naturalistic' barrettes

An old silver plate mantel clock from back in the 80's.
Purchased for $2.00 at the thriftstore.
The silver plate case is the only thing of worth on it, as the back is entirely black plastic, as is the watch hands, the front 'crystal', and even the clock motor housing.
Really, all I did was remove the paper watch face (it had some very 80's roman numerals) and redid the numbers in sepia color ink with my handy dandy ink dip (or is it dip ink?) pen using a calligraphy nib. And gave the hands some decorative swirls in a metallic olive green to make the whole thing look more 'olde fashioned'.
I also stuffed the case with packing peanuts held together with hot glue to muffle the ticking as I bought this for a bedroom clock and that plastic/ metal casing really conducted/ amplified the ticking at night.
Fortunately, it was so old the glue had dehydrated enough that I could pry it apart without damaging anything, or else I would have had to use it as it was.
I just love the color of the tarnished silver, and it's far better than anything else I could find out there for telling time that went with my bedroom decor.
And since I felt I needed something a bit more crafty:
a set of oldish 1" barrettes I made.

Using some fake bugs/ lizards I had from another project that got repainted with a combination of hobby acrylics, and glazed with clear acrylic with iridescent powders in them. Since they're so big they're held on with a combination of glue and wire. (they got body pierced with a hot pin then later run through with wire). The dragonfly is a real eyecatcher.
A plain old faux leaf (it's fabric that has been coated in a rubbery substance), I feel like a woodsprite when I'm wearing it.
And a couple 'Meat' barrettes made with sculpy. These are my favorites.
Ok, bye now!
