Hey everyone

So I was definitely inspired by the Yoda cake posted a few weeks ago that I decided to make one for my friend's son's 12th birthday. I did it my own way though and keep in mind-first time making and using fondant, sculpting a cake and painting with food colouring :P Tutorial included

So I baked two 9" chocolate cakes and let them cool. I used store bought frosting to make a 2 layer cake then roughly cut a Yoda head shape.

I then made a fairly detailed sketch based on my cake shape+Yoda's face to determine where every ridge was going to be placed. I cut all of the pieces out from the cake trimmings from the first step and adhered them to the cake with some more frosting.

Next, I frosted the whole thing. I wasn't too careful doing this seeing as how it wouldn't be seen anyway once then fondant was made.

I didn't take any pictures of the fondant process but I used the marshmallow recipe from the first Yoda cake post. I had never made fondant before and it was MESSY. The only tricky part was rolling it out. I didn't use enough cornstarch on my counter the first time so it stuck and I had to re roll it. After that was all done, I covered my shaped cake and pressed the fondant down into the crevices formed by my cake shapes earlier. I also followed the tip from the first post and shaped the ears using excess fondant.

Every next step I did was just adding details. I painted eyeballs with food colouring (they are just white fondant), then proceeded to give him eyelids, wrinkles, etc. I used a wooden skewer to shape my fondant and add the wrinkles.

One eyeball in...

And this was near the end. My camera batteries died so this is as close to the final product as I could get. It looks very similar anyway.

So there it is. I think my first time cake decorating was pretty successful. Overall (not including baking), this took me about 4 hours including making the fondant.

I guess I should point out that I have been an artist all of my life so this was pretty much just doing a sculpture but in a different edible medium. I had a lot of fun and I hope everyone enjoys the post :)
