Using India ink as textile dye?

I've been unable to locate any retailer around me who carries fabric dye that isn't Rit. I've heard more negative than positive about Rit, and buying dye online is a no-go for me. Would it be a particularly bad idea to attempt using India ink to dye clothing? Is there anyone here who has done this before? I'm aware that it would certainly dye the clothes, but what I worry about is the likelihood of the dye coming off on one's skin during the wear of the dyed clothes.
